Dr Raouf Bassily is a highly respected gastroenterologist with over 37 years of clinical experience. Known for his compassionate and individualised approach to patient care.
Dr Bassily completed his undergraduate medical degree at Alexandria University, Egypt. After successfully passing the RACP (UK) examination, he migrated to Australia where he obtained a Master of Medicine and commenced his Physician training.
His Basic Physician Training was undertaken at the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre. He gained further expertise in Infectious Diseases during his time as a registrar at Fairfield Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, and The Alfred Hospital—developing a strong foundation in HIV medicine, tropical diseases, and hospital-based infectious diseases.
Dr Bassily subsequently completed advanced training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Austin Hospital, where he gained comprehensive experience in the management of liver diseases, liver transplantation, luminal gastroenterology, and both elective and emergency endoscopy. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1999.
For over 24 years, Dr Bassily has served the community through his role as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Northern Health. He also consults privately at GastroNorth, providing care across multiple locations including Bundoora, Whittlesea, and Wallan. He performs endoscopy procedures at The Victorian Gut Centre, Northpark Private Hospital, and Northern Private Hospital.
His clinical interests include:
- Endoscopy – High-quality gastroscopy and colonoscopy, including bowel cancer screening
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease – Management of Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
- Functional Gut Disorders – Including Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Coeliac Disease – Diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management
- Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)
Dr Bassily is fluent in English, Arabic, and French, allowing him to effectively communicate with a diverse patient base. He is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and the American Gastroenterological Association. He remains actively engaged in continuing medical education and regularly attends both national and international conferences to stay current with developments in the field.
